For a girl-
On the Sabbath after the birth, the father is called to the reading of the Torah.
After he does the blessings and his section is read,
the Gabbai (the guy runnnig the reading) blesses the family
and then announces the girl's name to the community.
For a boy -
On Friday night after the boy is born, there is a Shalom Zahor - a party which includes the neighborhood children saying the Shema prayer next to the baby
(Shema Isael, Ad-n-i Eloheinu, Ad-n-i Ehod - Hear oh Israel, the Lord your God is the One God)
Then on the Eighth day is the circumcision. The baby is named during the blessings after the circumcision.
For the natural first born (ie: if there was a caesarian or a previous miscarriage, this ritual does not take place) son of a Jew who is not of the tribe of Levi -
after one month passes, the baby is redeamed from Temple service (before the sin of the Golden calf, the first borns in each tribe were supposed to become priests - as a result of the sin, the tribe of Levi took that responsibility) - the center of this ritual is where the father gives the Cohein (a member of the family decended from Aaron, Moses' brother) 5 shekalim.
